August Wilson's Pittsburgh: The Ground On Which He Stood

Pulitzer Prize-winning playwright August Wilson was born and raised in Pittsburgh, so it was only fitting that he be honored in his hometown, at a special reception on what would have been his 62nd birthday – April 27, 2007.  For that special occasion, Dollar Bank and the August Wilson Center for African American Culture worked with PMI to create an 8-minute hi-def video presentation that offered viewers a glimpse into Wilson’s life and the inspirations for his plays.

Presented at the David L. Lawrence Convention Center in the Dollar Bank Regional Showcase Gallery, the piece featured interviews with some of those who knew Wilson best.  From childhood friends and fellow playwrights to scholars of the dramatic arts, they created a colorful portrait of August Wilson and his accomplishments.  These interviews were combined with the words of Wilson himself, from his acceptance speech for the 2003 Heinz Award for the Arts and Humanities.

Working with Dollar Bank’s Dorothy Spangler, PMI’s crew faced both time and weather challenges, attempting to shoot the interviews outdoors in a Pittsburgh March and still meet the deadline.  They got what they needed though, and Creative Director Jose Muniain combined those interviews with photographs of Pittsburgh’s Hill District, where Wilson grew up in the 1940’s and 50’s, along with stills and footage from several of Wilson’s plays.  According to Dorothy, “Jose came up with a brilliant design, connected with the soul of the subject, and maintained control of the project during the editing phase.”

Through the hard work of editors Ed Fraticelli and John Fischerkeller, soundtrack designer/mixer Jack Bailey, audio engineer Shawn Jackson, director/cameraman Shannon Barry, and the folks at Dymun + Company, the piece came together and the show’s opening reception went off without a hitch.  In Dorothy’s words, “This is why we love working with PMI!  The finished product was a touching tribute to a great American playwright.”  PMI was proud to participate in its creation.

The Return Of Captain Fun!

It's The Energy

And the Survey Says. . .

It's The Energy

Point Park University’s Starmakers gala is an annual black tie event that spotlights the University’s Conservatory of Performing Arts (COPA).  The event also expresses gratitude to those who support the University, and serves as a fundraiser for the school.  This year, PMI was asked to produce a DVD for the event that would highlight various aspects of the school including the physical growth to 13 downtown properties, the expanse of different areas of study for undergraduates, and the convenience of its programs for non-traditional students.  Through the direction of Mariann Geyer, VP of Institutional Advancement, and Angela Burrows, Senior Director of Marketing and Public Relations, the PMI team stepped up to meet the challenge.

Director/Producer Zoot Dwyer went on location to interview University President Paul Hennigan and Allegheny County Chief Executive Dan Onorato, as well as many of the faculty members, students and alumni.  Zoot threw himself into this project, saying, “We wanted to capture the energy of the active campus, including areas of study not often recognized.”  Filming student interactions and class activity, as well as showing how the city has changed for the better due to the expansion of Point Park University, demonstrated that growth in action.

"We even got President Hennigan to agree to an interview in the new dance studio that's still under construction.",  added Dwyer. PMI Creative Director Jose Muniain and Editor Don Sigmund then used their talents to add in some beautiful city and campus shots.  Then Audio Services Director Jack Bailey, designed a soundtrack to create a dynamic piece that received an enthusiastic round of applause from the University’s board of directors.
This video will have life beyond Starmakers.  It’s to be presented at an upcoming alumni reception in New York City and will continue to be shown to Point Park supporters and prospective students, well into the future.

The Return Of Captain Fun!

PMI is bringing the FUN back to First Avenue this summer.  After a long hiatus, “Captain Fun” has returned, this time in the form of a crack team of PMIers dedicated to planning fun activities and events for our friends and family.  “F-Team” members (that’s “Fun-Team”) include Kelly Mizak, CFO (“Chief Fun Officer”); Erin Kennedy, Captain Fun Ambassador; Angela Lattanzio, Captain Fun Liaison; and Jessica McGinnis, the Fun Whisperer.

The first order of business for the F-Team was to plan a Memorial Day Happy Hour on May 25, complete with a door prize for the attendee with the most festive attire which was won by our own Amanda Pfennig.  Next up will be a Summer Fun Party to be held on Friday, June 8, starting at 4:00.  If you have an idea for additional fun activities, there’s a “Captain Fun Suggestion Box” at the PMI reception desk, or you can email us at Captain Fun.

And The Survey Says. . .

Here at PMI, we always strive to improve ourselves…from the technology in our suites and the efficiency of our sales team, to the personal client services we provide.  In order to better serve you, we need as much feedback as we can get.

Each month, PMI sends out a survey to many of our clients who have recently completed projects with us.  We want to know what we’re doing well, what needs work, and how we can make certain that your experience here is successful, stress free, and significantly beyond your expectations.  Each and every compliment, complaint, and suggestion is taken to heart, and if there are changes we can make so that your time here is even more enjoyable and productive, we’ll make them.

Over the years, the feedback we’ve received has resulted in many customer service improvements.  Some of these include adding wireless internet access in the facility so you can stay connected while you’re here, more customer-friendly billing practices to make that process easier, and the use of our Client Suites for project postings on our website, to make the approval process more efficient.  You asked and we delivered.

So if you receive a client survey in your inbox, please don’t delete it!  Take a few moments and let us know about your experience here and how we can do our jobs better.  We’ll listen – we promise!  And we’ll take action as necessary.
